INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Federal prosecutors in Indianapolis say three brothers have been sentenced to prison for running an operation that smuggled women into the United States and forced them into prostitution throughout the Midwest.
Court documents allege the men brought in women from Mexico and Central America and marketed them as prostitutes to Hispanic men in Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. Prosecutors say the operation was based in Indianapolis.
Gregorio Hernandez-Castilla of Indianapolis was sentenced Wednesday to more than three years in prison after he pleaded guilty to conspiring to operate an interstate prostitution ring with his two brothers. Jose Luis Hernandez-Castilla of Indianapolis and Norberto Hernandez-Castilla of Addison, Ill., had already pleaded guilty and are serving more than four years on similar charges.

Gregorio was sentenced to 41 months in federal prison, while his siblings each received prison terms of 51 months.
Forced into prostitution to repay the brothers for smuggling them into the United States, the women were moved on a weekly basis between the various locations.

The Hernandez-Castilla criminal organization was headed by the three brothers and had been operating for a number of years in the Indianapolis area, largely under the direction of Jose Luis Hernandez-Castilla. The brothers would acquire women to act as prostitutes, on many occasions smuggling them into the United States from Mexico and Central America. Once here, many were often without a means by which to make money and thus would engage in prostitution to pay off debts they owed the brothers for subsidizing their entry into the country.
